Science and Engineering Research Project and German Language Study

SUMMER SNAPSHOT

This engineering internship and language study program invites students to spend three months in the "green metropolis" of Hannover, Germany. Students conduct research in English while learning German and discovering the beauty of the region.

PROGRAM TYPE

ISEP-Exchange Summer for all US and I-to-I exchange member students

COURSES

The first two weeks are dedicated to an orientation period including intensive German language instruction and intercultural training. During the intercultural training, participants will receive an introduction to daily life in Germany.

During the remaining 10 weeks students can expect to participate in at least 35 hours of research per week in their individual department.

Participants will be supported by a personal supervisor at the chosen institute, furthermore staff of the International Office and a "Study Buddy" will help the student to orient in Clausthal or Hannover.

At the conclusion of the program there will be a discussion with faculty and other students on their research project.

CREDITS:

Typically participants will receive 12 credit points:

6 CP by participation
3 CP for German language instruction / intercultural training
3 CP for project thesis

Acknowledgement of credit points -> US credit hours depends on regulations at the home university.

German Language and Culture:
German language courses have been a longstanding area of expertise at this university. The purest form of German is spoken in the Hannover region, making it an ideal place to learn the language. Intensive and engaging classes, close interaction with university faculty, and a vibrant campus life make learning German in Hannover fun, exciting, and effective. Note: Students are placed in language courses according to proficiency.

SPECIAL ACADEMIC CONSIDERATIONS

Eligible applicants must be at least in their second year of an undergraduate- or graduate-level degree in engineering or science. Participating students will receive a maximum of 12 credits in mechanical engineering (6 CP by participation, 3 CP for German language instruction / intercultural training, 3 CP for project thesis).

Please note that this program is considered by the host institution to be the equivalent of a full semester exchange (tuition, housing and meals).

Please note that credits will be awarded depending on the home university's transfer policy.

LANGUAGE NOTES

No Prior German is necessary. I-to-I applicants who are non-native English speakers must submit an ISEP Language Proficiency Report (or alternate proof of proficiency in either German or English). Note: The host institution ultimately determines proficiency level and course eligibility.

HOUSING AND MEALS

Students will stay in student dorms with single private bedrooms and shared kitchen and bathroom areas. All rooms are completely furnished and have internet access. Students receive a meal stipend.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

The science & engineering internship program is complemented by numerous excursions to exciting German cities such as Berlin and Hamburg as well as by fieldtrips to world famous companies such as Volkswagen, Airbus, MTU Aero Engines, Sennheiser.

Participants can also take advantage of leisure activities such as bicycle tours, hiking trips, film festivals, soccer games and visits to pubs and museums.

INTERNSHIPS, SERVICE LEARNING, VOLUNTEERING

This program involves an individual study or research project that is suitable for science & engineering students in general. Each student is matched with a supervisor in a research lab or institute and is integrated into the research team. The academic aspect of this program is enhanced by an introduction, meetings, a written project thesis, and follow-up sessions with supervisors and fellow participants.

PROFILE

This diversity of academic and scientific disciplines combined with high-quality research and excellent study conditions make Hannover University an attractive study abroad destination. Facilities include libraries (the TIB technical library is among the largest and best in German), research centers, the center for water-waves experiments, the production engineering center, a computer center, a sports center, and a language center.

LOCATION

Hannover is not only the the heart of a region of about 1.2 million people but also the headquarter of companies such as Volkswagen, Continental, Sennheiser, and MTU. It is surrounded by beautiful lakes and green forests. The city itself houses many parks and idyllic gardens, adding to the city's reputation for being a "green metropolis." Hannover also combines an attractive mixture of historic and modern architecture, especially in the old city center and its modern shopping areas.

Hannover is located in the northern part of Germany close to Berlin and Hamburg. Hannover has an excellent public transportation system which can ISEP students use for free.
